Let’s Party
Is 12/24 through New Years a week-long party? A crescendo of festive meals?
Some of my best childhood memories come from this time of year. Homemade cookie boxes of lemon squares and toffee bars for snacks during 2-day games of Monopoly. Our family baked loaves of stollen, the traditional German yeasted fruit bread of Christmas. Before opening presents, we ate toasted stollen slices with just butter. We washed the meal down with tea, pots and pots of tea.
Sometimes we ate turkey for the second time in a month, that is except for the year I insisted we order lobsters so we could eat a red dinner.
Later, eggnog appeared. My sister, Moira, sat at the piano, my mom pulled the songbooks from upstairs and we gathered around Moira’s bench as she introduced the first chords and we began to sing.
Whatever your traditions, this time of year is about the changing of light, gathering, creating warmth and merriment.
